Moses continues urging Israel to obey God’s commandments, reminding them that faithfulness brings blessing while disobedience brings judgment. He recalls the LORD’s provision, protection, and power, making clear that Israel’s victories will come by the LORD’s strength, not by their own righteousness. Moses also reminds them of their sin with the golden calf, his intercession on their behalf, and God’s mercy in renewing the covenant with a second set of stone tablets. Israel is called to love and serve the LORD wholeheartedly, trusting that their prosperity depends on obedience and that God remains faithful to His promises.

Personal Reflection and Application

Has God change His mind about Israel? This question seems to be a hot topic today. There are many people who claim that God is finished with the Jews, that because of their sin and rebellion he has replaced them with the church. But this is not God’s character and could not be further from the truth. I hope that by digging into God’s word today you will see that scripture shows us that God’s promises were never based on Israel’s righteousness but on His own faithfulness. It has always been about God’s faithfulness to accomplish His purposes and keep His covenant promises.

We ended last week with a profound statement from Moses about God and his character. He is faithful and He keeps his covenants!

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction; he will not be slow to repay those who hate him. Deuteronomy 7:9 We need to remember this as we go into this week’s reading.

 Let’s look at some Biblical truths that show that GOD never breaks his promises nor does he change his mind. Moses gives Israel a history lesson, not to shame them but to remind them of the truth: they survived because God was faithful. It was the LORD that brought them out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. He led them through the wilderness for forty years testing them. He caused them to hunger and then fed them manna. Their clothes never wore out, and their feet did not swell. They aroused the anger of the LORD in the dessert by their sin of the golden calf, they complained about the provisions from the LORD, they even rebelled and did not go up into the land to take possession of it because they did not trust and obey the LORD their God. Moses interceded in prayer and reminded God of his promises and God was faithful remembering his covenant.  Moses also reminded the Israelites not to grow arrogant and think it was because of their righteousness and integrity that they will take possession of the land. He made it clear that it was because of God’s promise to Abraham Isaac and Jacob to accomplish what he swore on oath to them.

So, there we have it, all throughout todays reading Moses is reminding the Israelites of their sinfulness and rebellion and God’s faithfulness. Israel’s obedience affected their experience of blessing, but it did not cancel God’s covenant promises. It wasn’t on account of their faithfulness it was on account of God’s faithfulness and his character. Moses tells them all throughout todays reading to love the Lord with all their heart and to be careful to follow his commands. That with obedience comes blessings and that curses follow disobedience. But God’s promises never fail.

Takeaway: Israel’s story reminds us that God’s promises rest on His faithfulness, not human righteousness. Though Israel failed repeatedly, the LORD remained true to His covenant, His character, and His word. Our response should be humble trust, wholehearted love, and faithful obedience to the God who never forgets His promises.
